Promote Inline Skating & Cycling Like a Bacon Explosion

roadskater's picture
Have you heard of the Bacon Explosion? If so, how did you learn about it (really, post a reply if you feel up to it? For me, it was one of my favorite places, the "most-emailed" section of the New York Times website. But for many, it seems it started with Twitter, then was boosted by StumbleUpon and probably Digg.

You may be saying, "huh?"

OK. First of all, a Bacon Explosion is a food item, some would say, and a very pig-oriented one, as it is made of...

two pounds of bacon woven through and around two pounds of sausage and slathered in barbecue sauce

I hope I never get to have any of this. I think I could love it in not so healthy proportions.

Apparently 16,000 web sites have linked to the recipe, and this was the most emailed item of the day on nytimes.com as of this writing.

So what I am suggesting is that if you are reading this and you love skating and cycling, and you wonder how to promote the sport, and why can't we find more people to get involved, and how can we get more kids and young adults into the sport, then I say...

  • Get to know those icons on the websites like roadskater.net (below the articles) for StumbleUpon, Digg, del.icio.us, facebook and others, and
  • Use those icons to promote skating and cycling stories by digging, stumbling, and such.
  • I'll love it if you do it for roadskater.net but really I want you to do it for all the websites you use and love for skating and cycling and other content.
  • Post here about stuff you love on other skating websites, and if there's something here you love, by all means post links on other sites...a rising tide floats all boats and such.
  • This is the power of social networking and it can work for your sport if you love it enough to do the cross-linking of great stuff (people tend to read only a few websites and you can help them find great stuff by linking and digging and stumbling).
  • The Bacon Explosion story is very important for what it shows about twitter, stubleupon, digg. Many sites report how Digg mentions can actually bring their servers to their ficticious knees...and it's a great problem to have, and I think we're ready were it to ever happen, as the site is faster and more robust since the recent upgrades and mods methinks.
  • Let's make a SKATING EXPLOSION skatelog, londonskaters, inlineplanet, and sites all over the world.
  • When you link to a site on another site, it helps the linked site's search engine rankings, helping your cause.
  • Just do it for your sport.
  • I'll try to keep improving things and adding tools to use here, but remember YOU are the movement if you want to be.
  • Be the change you wish to see and all that, y'all.
