Atlanta Becomes a Huge Ice Skating Grid...for Tractor Trailers and Automobiles

Wow. It looks pretty nasty down there in downtown Atlanta. Check out the brightcove link below for the original video, but I'm updating this to include some video of a woman someone skating on the streets of Atlanta (near Georgia Tech I believe, where we've roadskated on wheels), inspired by eebee's posts below. Here's the brief roadskating video of a different sort...with figure skates, no less...

Outdoor Skating Oval Opens, Weather Permitting, Halifax NS Canada

Oohwee! Outdoor ice oval in Halifax for the Canada Games open to the public, weather permitting! Here's a great quick read about the opening of the big ice on Halifax Commons, mainly for a dose of excitement about speed skating from our northern neighbors. Interesting that a guy got elected there without skating for 40 years, and that bike helmets are not allowed on the ice, only ones designed for skating. Interesting. Perhaps it's about the aero shape on the back of the head on lots of helmets? In any case, thank you, Canada, for loving skating so well and thoroughly!

Eighty and Still Skatey! 80 Laps for the Lady

Just in case you want another reason to keep on skating, consider Agatha Van Der Starre's 80th birthday celebration on ice. She did 80 laps with friends to celebrate 80 years. Like many who love various forms of skating, she came to it late in terms of joining the speedskating club. Being from Holland and then Canada, it'd be crazy to think she never skated, but it seems her speedskating started some time around 1980 in a serious way. She medaled at the British Columbia games a couple of years later, and fifteen years after that, still going strong...

4th Annual Carolina Century Bike Ride Inline Skate October 22 2011 Greensboro NC

2011.10.22 7:00 am
2011.10.22 6:00 pm
America/New York

Look for the 2011 Carolina Century on 10/22/11. A proven EPIC event. More details to come......most certainly. :-) http://carolinacentury.com

[Ed: Thanks, MikeB, for putting this out there early! From here on out this is roadskater speaking.]

With a bike to skate ratio of 15 to 1 or so...This is a bicycle event designed by roadskater to be compatible with slower or heavier cyclists, fast cyclists looking for a rolling but fast course with few challenging turns and no switchbacks, and experienced roadskaters. The Carolina Century even has a sherpa/domestique who will ride in support of a first-time centurion (or a pack of them). Thanks to John Connor for being the Carolina Century guide. We'll be rolling along near the back to make sure that the rest stops stay open and well stocked.

24-Hour Inline Montreal Race Report

Wow... What do you say after skating for 24 hours? Well, first off I want to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to our AWESOME support team! Andrea, Maria, Renee, and Dawn -- YOU ROCK! In fact, we need to create a whole new verb that adequately describes how much you rock. And another BIG THANKS to Brian Shicoff for organizing everything, and to Lawrence for really making me earn that silver medal, and to Bryan McKenney for rounding out our team of Americans determined to fulfill Brian's dream of sweeping the podium... (lol)

NC State Games at Greensboro Country Park June 23-24

We saw more guys out today in skinsuits and on bikes than usual, and I wondered what was up. The funny thing was there were road and mtb types, and some of them seemed to be checking out particular parts of the course with special attention. I forgot all of this until I started looking at ride calendars for the weekend, and in addition to Blood, Sweat and Gears (50 mile/100 mile) in the mountains, I found out that the State Games of NC take place in Greensboro Country Park this weekend.

Tour de Kale 2007 Report

After several years of seeing the Tour de Kale flyers and jerseys out and about in Greensboro, I had the pleasure this year of finally taking part in this very well-run event. Denton, NC is a little town out in the country, Southwest of Greensboro, and a few miles southwest of Tour de Lions country, i.e., slightly more mountain-side, i.e., slightly hillier. Distance options this year were 120k, 110k, 60k (which Blake and I skated), and 25k (which Andy skated). Tour de Kale offers cash prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd male and female, spread over 4 categories for the 'Summit Challenge', which includes a Bubba division (male over 200lbs). Price is $35 for pre-reg., $40 the day of, plus a $10 deposit on the timing-chip, to be reimbursed after you turn it back in again. For this you get a bib #, meal ticket, event T-shirt & sponsor goodie bag, 120k of support vehicles & rest stops, and a beautiful country course.

Floyd Landis Makes 48 Mountain Bikers Happy

While waiting for news of his fate, after a very strange hearing including threats, firings, secrets unveiled, and lots more mental gymnastics, Floyd Landis made his way back on the bike in Vail, Colorado for a mountain bike race. He made 48 people very happy by placing 49th. Imagine finishing ahead of the "then current" Tour de France champion in any kind of bike race!

Kudos to Greensboro NC for Center City Park Wireless WiFi Access

Hello to all after a few days away when even RSN2.com took a day or two off! I'm sitting in Greensboro's Center City Park using the Wifi connection, and I must say this is nice. At about 8pm, the light is fading and the temperature is cooling a bit from a nice warm day. I decided against skating for several reasons, one being the orange level air quality warning, a very late schedule of sleeping and waking, and some work that needed to be done.
