Another Multiple Sclerosis - Skating Connection for me

In reply to Sparkles Speed Skaters Blurring By on a Wednesday Night:

At the speed practice I got to know a 40 year-oldish skater whose doctors are toying with the idea of diagnosing him with MS. He has been having symptoms for about a year, and pointed out to me the Mono exposure/Eppstein-Barr virus connection with MS in later years. He said his first ever MS-like symptoms showed up almost 20 years to the day that he came down with Mono. One of his first symptoms was a wet-like sensation in his lower legs, and he explained to me that the erratic nature of the relapses makes an official diagnosis tricky.

As this fellow spoke to me about his possible MS, I was accutely aware of the nagging, vibrating sensation I had felt for a few days in my left foot, and tried not to freak out. Not trying to be cute, but I'm really hoping it's just because I'm too fat for my jeans right now. The list of symptoms for MS is so vast, I easily identified with one aspect of four different categories, one strange one that I've had since I was ten.

Anyway, I'm probably just severely sleep-deprived, but this has reinforced my decision to sign up early again for more Tour to Tanglewood madness!

Well, yeah, I did say that

Well, yeah, I did say that about 20 minutes ago. But then I decided to give it a try with anonymous comments using squiggly letter input and a moderation queue. I don't want to encourage the junksters so it could all be slammed shut in no time, but we'll see. We'll go back to authenticated comments only soon if need be. Skateylove y'all. What's your favorite picture?

Ground Pepperoni, Lots of Parmesan Cheese, Some Dried Red Pepper

In reply to Bicycle Toy & Hobby High Point NC 2007 Tour to Tanglewood TR Photos:

I had an incredible ride home, as I think I indicated, and as can be seen from the photo of the partially-consumed pie. Once everyone was gone from the bike shop, or close to it, I ambled over to Sir Pizza, scene of many happy visits in a portion of my youth where my family would drive from several miles away for a night out to eat.

click here to see a larger photo

This being usually a once-per-year-or-less treat (at Sir Pizza, I mean, as Elizabeth's on Lawndale is more like once-per-week-if-we-skated), I decided to get the biggest pizza they had, with the ground (not sliced) pepperoni. Once it was ready, I asked for some cheese and pepper to go, but what they gave me were packages I thought would be not worth the effort.

I went into the restaurant eat-in section and took the top off of a parmesan cheese dispenser and sprinkled, yeah varily dumped, cheese among all of the wonderful, hot, pepperoni grease on top of the pizza. This accounts for the wonderful color variations between pale yellow, dark red and the blend, the good stuff. Then I think I added red pepper but I am not certain, and I don't see any in the photo. I may have decided just to taste the creation without the extra fire, as it was tasty already with the awesome pepperoni and other quality ingredients.

I can say proudly I ate the whole thing...but not on the way home. I probably ate 3/4 of the edges or maybe all the way around on the way home, then a bit more upon arrival, and snackies later and for breakfast. Yum!

That pizza in the last photo sure looks good! I wish I could have joined you for some of it but I was getting pretty sleepy and I don't think I could have. Always fun to see photos of the scenery and the smiling faces out there on the road.

Bike Projects

In reply to Test of Image Tags: My Goofy Fixed-Gear Funnybike:

Thanks Craig! Good luck getting the single-speed sorted out. By the way, the red 26" commuting/touring bike with the stuck seatpost that you kindly helped me unstick over the winter is on the road and pretty well sorted out now. (I see a Sawzall in my not-too-distant future!) Maybe I'll get a picture of that one posted too sometime.

I took my white Pinarello partly apart for cleaning and lubing yesterday and hope to finish that and get it all back together today. And I think I might finally have all the parts needed to finish the Big Blue Bike with the sewup cyclocross tires, after scoring a rear brake with the right drop at Le Cirque and finding cable hangers, barrel adjusters, and a seatpost for it in someone's junkbox a couple of days later. But there's no timetable for wrapping up that one for now.

Yep I Can See the Funny Bike and Whimsical Tree

In reply to Test of Image Tags: My Goofy Fixed-Gear Funnybike:

Timv was wondering if I had image uploading going yet so I did some tests.

I am able to make file attachments and could allow that for users, but have not because I wanted a better solution (I won't bore you with details yet). These file attachments don't display as photos, but could be useful for short mpg or mp3 original content.

Meanwhile, some time ago at the request of kjg (where are ye?) I turned on image tags in the article posting filters so you could use them in posts if you know how and know where the photo is hosted. I haven't encouraged it because I want to make it where you can upload images or maybe even have a gallery of photos hosted here if you like.

But as so many things go, this has not floated to the top of my list yet, until perhaps today, which I was already planning to spend part of looking at various upgrades, changes, options, feature additions and eliminations, &c.

For now, if you use image tags, just understand that this feature may go away later, just like the photos to which they refer, unless you own them (and we don't want to use photos without permission unless they are part of an RSS feed making them explicitly available).

Eventually I want the photos that are part of your articles to be hosted here of course, so we don't get the red x when the image is gone. If this makes no sense, just email me and I'll explain.

If I get all of this going I might try posting or linking to a photo a day. Ha. Wonder how long that would last?

Cool bike, timv! Thanks for asking about this feature.

Tour de Lions Photos feedback

In reply to Tour de Lions 2007 Photos:

Teletubbies ---> this way...

http://www.roadskater.net/tour-de-lions-2007/070519101124.htm

Funny!

I liked the 'do and the 'tude in this one:

http://www.roadskater.net/tour-de-lions-2007/070519082840.htm

And I like this one of post-event cheerfulness:

http://www.roadskater.net/tour-de-lions-2007/070519120358.htm

Thanks for the photos. I enjoyed them!

An easy bronze for showing up

Great recap of Sunday's races Blake. Just a note to add. Some of the women's races had so few participants that showing up would have earned a female cyclist a bronze medal.

I wish :-)

In reply to Found some photos of Texas Road Rash 2007:

Thanks for the complement, eebee... However, it only looked easy :-)

A few pictures that I liked:

The finish sprint (I didn't have to sprint since I didn't have a pack but I really wanted to test my legs): http://image59.webshots.com/759/4/56/19/2930456190054477580RpaHAs_fs.jpg?track_pagetag=/page/photo/sports/skating&track_action=/ViewActions/FullSize

In the lactic acid hell after the finish sprint: http://image57.webshots.com/457/2/83/16/2611283160054477580ZWtihf_fs.jpg?track_pagetag=/page/photo/sports/skating&track_action=/ViewActions/FullSize

And yes, this is how easy it was: http://image53.webshots.com/553/1/26/94/2696126940054477580FSyncJ_fs.jpg?track_pagetag=/page/photo/sports/skating&track_action=/ViewActions/FullSize

when you find it, let me know

In reply to Found some photos of Texas Road Rash 2007:

"Just gotta get a job where I can take about 10 weeks of vacation a year so that I have time to do all the important (skating) stuff! :-)"

Hey SkateyMark when you figure that one out let me know! Don't forget it has to pay way more than enough for flights, restaurants, hotels, event fees, new speed boots once a year if necessary, personal chef, oh and a car + gas to get to and from training! I think the Germans have that sorted out...no wait, it's only 6 weeks vacation they get per year :-)

Thanks for the write-up, Artem. You sure had the camera fooled: as I was scrolling through those photos you pretty much look like you're cruising along leisurely in most of them!

In reply to Found some photos of Texas Road Rash 2007:

Congratulations on your great finish! Sounds like you're off to a great start this year, and I'm sure you'll be nipping at my heels in no time! Learning when to chase and when not to is difficult, and just comes with experience. I guess ideally you would have noticed the two guys attacking earlier and not had such a large gap to close. Then the three of you could have probably held off the chase pack...

Sounds like a great event... I hope to do it one of these years. Just gotta get a job where I can take about 10 weeks of vacation a year so that I have time to do all the important (skating) stuff! :-)

A quick TRR 2007 report

In reply to Found some photos of Texas Road Rash 2007:

Good eyes, eebee! I did do the event and it was a blast! I just got home due to some unforeseen adventure that Delta airlines threw my way by cancelling my return flight but I hope that I am coherent enough to have a fairly comprehensive report :-) I got to Austin, TX on Saturday afternoon and took my rental over to Round Rock where the race was supposed to happen next day and where the registration was. The registration was set up next to Chipotle and seemed like a very smooth operation. I have picked my packet up in no time and was delighted to see Brian and Andrea. We chatted a little bit about the race course (since Brian has done it several times and for me it was first) and winter training. Brian mentioned that between his work and other commitments he was not getting adequate training and was going to skate in the Fitness category. I was registered for Advanced. After a little while Brian and Andrea had to leave to celebrate Brian's birthday and I hung around for a little longer. Finally, I have left the registration site, checked into the hotel that was only a few miles from the course and set off to explore Austin. The evening was not very eventful since all I was interested in was getting some pasta and sleep J However, I did stroll on the 6th street (mostly by mistake, but now I know that it does not have any affordable Italian restaurantsJ ) and settled for a spaghetti and meatballs dinner at Carraba’s. I did, though, drive to the Old Settler’s Park that night to make sure that I knew where to go in the morning…I got to the Old Settler’s Park at 6:45AM on Sunday and it was just getting to live. I ate my breakfast Powerbars and had a big cup of coffee before starting the warm-up. The site was quickly filling up with skaters and I was definitely getting excited about the upcoming race. The race was from a stagnant start with no waves. Pro’s were standing first, followed by Advanced skaters and then Fitness. At first, I was a little concerned about the start since it was into a short but fast downhill and I was concerned that with 180 people anxiously running down this hill, we could see some carnage. This was not the case though, as everybody seemed to make it through the start in one piece. Now, let me describe the course a little bit so there is a better understanding of what was going on during the skate. As I mentioned, there was a short, fast downhill off the start followed by a long (about ¾ of a mile) gradual hill. The hill was not too bad, and it was easy to maintain a good speed there, but it was not flat. The hill was followed by a gradual ¼ of a mile downhill into a false flat. The false flat led into a downhill that was about ¾ of a mile and then into a gradual uphill for another half a mile. Basically, there were two very nice recovery areas and the rest of the course was all about grinding up gradual (by NO means any big) hills. The full marathon was 6 laps and was 28.4 miles long (vs. 26.2 standard marathon).Back to the race now. As I said, I have started right behind Pro’s and it was really smooth. When we’ve got to the first uphill I was staying with Pro’s and it seemed fairly easy. There was not a lot of jockeying going on and everything seemed fairly slow. However, as my head was going through thinking how easy it was, my heart was not really happy as I was clocking myself around 95% of my maximum. I stayed with the Pro pack (which probably included most of the advanced skaters at the time) for about ¾ of the first lap and decided to drop off since I was not going to last very long redlining like that. I finished the first lap alone and my idea was to stay calm and see if another pack catches me or if I catch up to anybody. I have noticed another skater up the road when I was a quarter into my second lap and started slowly reeling him in. I caught up to him shortly after he caught another skater that fell off the front. Thus, we had 3 skaters in a pack. It didn’t last long as we were chased down by another pack of 4-5 skaters who settled behind us. I have stayed with this pack of 7-8 skaters almost through the end of the race. Interestingly, everybody in the pack was quite and just did their share of work without too much cheer or chit-chat. On the first few laps there were some sprints for photo-ops at the finish line J but on the last two laps we have just settled into a rhythm that seemed to be sustainable for everybody and kept going. On the last lap, in the beginning of the first grinding uphill, two guys from the pack have decided to go on a flyer while others were getting water and Gatorade from an aid station. I have realized what have happened when the farthest guy was probably 200-250 yards up the hill. That’s when I’ve made the biggest mistake of the race. I have sprinted up the hill to chase them. I have easily caught and passed the closest flyer but couldn’t quite get to the one that was ahead. By the time I realized that I was dead I was 30 yards behind that guy and the rest of my pack was sitting very comfortably in my draft. I had to pull out and hope that I recover enough on the upcoming downhill… which I did not. I stayed with the pack for another couple of miles but I had to let them go as I was not able to keep up with them. I have finished the final lap alone at 1:35. Later, I found that I placed 3rd in the Advanced Men 30-39 category. Brian took 2nd place in his category.

After the race I hung around the start/finish area, had a plenty of bananas and left around 1 PM to catch my flight. I did stop by Rudy’s BBQ for lunch and it was GREAT! J Of course, to balance things out, Delta has cancelled my flight so I had to spend another night in Austin and was able getting home only today in the afternoon. However, with the cheese grater (the trophy) in my skating backpack and a few valuable lessons from the race I was very happy how the 2007 season started… Let more racing come...

EDIT: It looks like I was 10th among all Advanced skaters. Yay! Top 10 placement in the first race of the season :-) (besides division placement)

Check the www.skatedc.org website for the next Skate DC weekend. It used to be on Memorial Day weekend each year, but they had it on my birthday weekend this year (May 5, 6 & 7). This was my first year at this event and I absolutely loved it.

They haven't set a date for it yet, and they may not finalize a date until a month or so ahead of time. Having a sister there sure is convenient! She skates, I hope?! Drag her out, too!

Well on this particularly nasty Friday the 13th (even though I don't believe in that load of codswallop), I enjoyed the DC photos. These in particular...

T2T Training Ride Photos I Like

In reply to T2T 2006 TR Photos: Bicycle Toy and Hobby High Point NC Plus Sunflowers:

Great job on these photos! I bet many cyclists will be happy to see themselves in good quality shots, where they're not just a dot cycling away on the horizon. Way to get plenty of shots before we fell off the back for the rest of the ride :-).

This one seems to capture, in particular, the peace and joy I feel on those training rides, after getting over the initial shock of waking up so early on a Saturday:

The Walls are Watching Plus Kubrick Sellers Satire

In reply to Café si vous plait:

Hey that's great that we have an Inline Café posting that is so completely about life outside skating. We want more! I think of these when driving or skating but can't seem to remember later on what it was. Everyone, please share your knowledge and experience.

As for the photos, how can I like anyone who can wear horizontal stripes and get away with it? And now we know where Mia might have gotten her 'do. It was the page boy cut I think, popular everywhere white patent leather zipper boots were sold.

Hey, in 3 of those, someone in a photo on the wall is watching her while she faces toward the photo somewhat. That's if you count the movie poster in the street outside the cinema. The one of her is pretty spookycool: "Hey! Get your hand off my blouse!" In another, with eyeglasses raised, a hip cat in the back of the café looks on a bit unfocused (yes I meant it all ways). Nice set pics. The lighting's not so grand on the one where she sits on the edge of the desk (probably molding her boots).

I thought on of them (with smoke) was a bit Winona Knightly but maybe I'm off on that.

The Mouse That Roared was one I liked when a kid methinks, where a tiny country wages war on the USA so it can get war reparations afterward, or something like that. But it must have been when I was very young, as I couldn't even remember there was a woman in that movie! My favorite from the IMDB group for Seberg is:

http://www.imdb.com/gallery/mptv/1331/2927_0037.jpg?path=pgallery&path_key=Seberg,%20Jean&seq=64

Even as a youngster I enjoyed the absurd plot that pointed out the utter absurdity of life at the time where fear of nuclear attack was a constant hum in the background, even if only heard in quiet moments. There's a link in that idea to the Kubrick Dr. Strangelove film in which Sellers also played three parts.

As an aside, after tracing the history and conjecturing on the meaning some long time ago of the band, Pearl Jam, following a previous name that might be related in nature, this leads me now to believe that the President's name, Merkin Muffley, might be a dirty joke...but I'm not sure, and not sure we should get all the way into that line of questioning here. However, note his character's name in Ghost in the Noonday Sun, and it seems within the realm of possibility.

I wonder if the novel was written before John F Kennedy's death but after the Cuban Missile Crisis. Strange days indeed. Most peculiar Momma.

Later in PS' career, I liked Being There. I think I liked it later in my life, too, not when it came out.

Kubrick and Sellers seems like a cool combo of which we needed more. Now I've gone back to watch the trailer of Being There, and notice a slightly discofied theme from 2001 as the backing track. It's a pretty funny trailer.

News Duplicates After Update

In reply to A New Roadskater.net:

The news section will have duplicates until I hack the code again after an upgrade to the section that handles all of that. I still don't like some of how it worked even after my hack, but it was a bit better. I may see if I can find some sources that offer the same news in a more compatible format, generating less duplicates as well. Dupes are because the same feed item often has a different URL because of how the provider tracks their traffic. I'll keep working on it. Blake

Kudos to Blake..

In reply to A New Roadskater.net:

Blake,

Just wanted to compliment and thank-you for taking the time and effort to put together this great site. It's flexiblity and openness make it a pleasure to use, while serving as a wonderful venue to express ourselves in regards to the sport we all love. And love it we must, who else would wear these painful, smelly boots, for pete's sake . But, oh the joy, these same boots can bring to the psyche's and body's of those who choose to indulge!

Looking back, it always amazes me to think about being able to barely stand in my Rollerblade Lightnings, and now, being able to barely stand in my Miller's.., but it's been a fun skglide the whole way.

Let's keep sharing the news,

Jack
